Is a Bowl Safe to Use in the Microwave?

February 02, 2023

In our fast-paced, modern era, the microwave has become a staple household appliance in most homes. It's no wonder, with the microwave offering a multitude of benefits that make life easier, like reheating leftovers, warming up food, and even cooking ingredients.

However, using a microwave shouldn't be taken lightly. Not all containers are suitable to be microwaved, as the high heat can make certain containers hazardous to your health or even damage the microwave itself.

Is a Bowl Safe to Use in the Microwave?

Think about plastic bowls, cups, or plates. While the food or drink itself may be safe, microwaving it in plastic can be dangerous. Research has shown that many plastic products contain Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical that becomes toxic when exposed to the heat of a microwave. When BPA mixes with food, it can cause cancer and other chronic illnesses if ingested.

Paper containers, which are commonly used for foods like popcorn. Unfortunately, these paper containers can easily catch fire in the microwave. The microwave's heat can ignite a small flame that can spread and engulf the paper container. Additionally, the smoke produced by a burning paper container contains toxins that can harm our respiratory system.

The safest and best containers to use in a microwave are those made of heat-resistant ceramic or glass, like casserole dishes. But keep in mind that glass or ceramic plates, bowls, cups, and mugs should be free of metallic decorations or paint, otherwise, they can cause sparks in the microwave.

For a more modern option, some melamine plastic containers with specific labels are also safe to use in a microwave. How can you tell? Just check the label or warnings on the container before microwaving. If you don't see a microwave-safe label, it's best not to use it.
